Health and Safety Policy for Gardeners Forestdale
Gardeners Forestdale is committed to providing professional gardening and grounds care services in a manner that protects the health, safety and welfare of our workers, clients, visitors and members of the public. This policy sets out our approach to managing health and safety across all gardening and maintenance activities carried out by our team.
Our Health and Safety Objectives
Our key objectives are to prevent injury, ill health and property damage arising from our work. We aim to identify, assess and control risks associated with gardening tasks, machinery, equipment, chemicals and the surrounding environment. We are committed to complying with relevant health and safety legislation and to continuously improving our standards and practices.
Responsibilities and Accountability
Overall responsibility for health and safety rests with the management of Gardeners Forestdale. Management will provide clear direction, adequate resources, appropriate information and suitable training to support the safe delivery of services.
All employees, gardeners and contractors engaged by Gardeners Forestdale have a duty to:
Follow safe working procedures and guidance provided by the company, use tools and equipment correctly and report hazards, near misses, incidents or defective equipment without delay. Every individual has a responsibility to take reasonable care of their own safety and that of others who may be affected by their actions.
Risk Assessment and Safe Working Practices
Before undertaking gardening work, a suitable and proportionate assessment of risks will be carried out. This includes evaluating the site layout, ground conditions, access routes, weather conditions and any specific client requirements. Where significant risks are identified, appropriate control measures will be put in place and communicated to all workers involved.
Safe systems of work will be developed for common gardening activities, including lawn care, hedge trimming, planting, pruning, tree work within our competency, waste removal and the operation of powered equipment. These systems will be reviewed and updated when equipment, techniques or regulations change, or when an incident indicates that improvements are required.
Use of Tools, Machinery and Equipment
Gardeners Forestdale will ensure that tools, machinery and vehicles used in delivering gardening services are suitable for the task, properly maintained and inspected at appropriate intervals. Only trained and competent personnel are permitted to operate powered machinery such as mowers, trimmers, blowers, chainsaws within scope, and other specialist gardening equipment.
Defective or unsafe equipment must be removed from service immediately and reported to management. Guards, safety devices and manufacturer instructions must never be bypassed or ignored. Equipment will be stored and transported securely to prevent injury or damage.
Personal Protective Equipment
Where risks cannot be adequately controlled by other means, Gardeners Forestdale will provide and maintain appropriate personal protective equipment. This may include safety boots, gloves, eye protection, hearing protection, high visibility clothing, respiratory protection and weather-appropriate workwear.
Workers are required to use the personal protective equipment provided, to keep it in good condition and to report any loss or damage. Substituting unsuitable equipment or working without required protection is not permitted.
Hazardous Substances and Chemicals
The use of pesticides, herbicides, fertilisers and other substances will be carefully controlled. Only products that are appropriate and lawful for gardening use will be selected. Instructions on product packaging and safety data information will be followed at all times.
Where these substances are used, we will ensure correct storage, handling, mixing and application methods. Workers will be trained in the safe use of such products and provided with any necessary protective equipment. We will seek to minimise chemical use and employ environmentally responsible methods wherever practical.
Manual Handling and Ergonomics
Many gardening tasks involve lifting, carrying, bending and repetitive movements. To reduce the risk of musculoskeletal injuries, Gardeners Forestdale promotes safe manual handling techniques, including correct lifting posture, load assessment and use of mechanical aids or team lifting where appropriate.
Work will be planned to avoid unnecessary strain, with breaks taken as required and tasks varied where possible. Employees are encouraged to report early signs of discomfort so that adjustments can be made.
Site Access, Public Safety and Traffic Management
When working at clients properties or in shared outdoor spaces, we will manage site access to protect residents, visitors and the general public. This includes clearly identifying work areas, using barriers or signage where needed and storing tools safely when unattended.
Special care will be taken when working near roads, driveways, car parks or shared paths. Vehicles will be parked considerately, and loading and unloading of equipment will be carried out in a controlled manner to minimise risk to others.
Environmental and Weather Considerations
Outdoor work is influenced by weather and environmental conditions. Gardeners Forestdale will take account of high winds, heavy rain, ice, excessive heat or low visibility when planning and carrying out work. If conditions are deemed unsafe, work will be delayed, adjusted or suspended.
We will also consider slopes, unstable ground, water features and underground services when planning tasks, and will adopt methods that reduce the risk of slips, trips, falls and other incidents.
Training, Information and Supervision
We are committed to providing appropriate health and safety training to our team. This includes induction training, task-specific instruction, equipment operation training and refreshers where required. Workers will be informed about site-specific hazards and client requirements before work starts.
Supervision will be proportionate to the risks involved, the complexity of the task and the experience of the individuals involved. New or less experienced workers will be supported until they are deemed competent to work safely with less direct supervision.
Accident Reporting and Emergency Procedures
All accidents, incidents, near misses and dangerous occurrences that happen during our gardening work must be reported as soon as possible. This enables Gardeners Forestdale to record, investigate and learn from events, and to introduce corrective actions where necessary.
Emergency arrangements, including first aid provision, emergency contacts and procedures for serious incidents, will be communicated to workers. Vehicles and teams will carry appropriate basic first aid supplies proportionate to the nature of the work.
Cooperation with Clients and Continuous Improvement
We recognise that effective health and safety management depends on cooperation between Gardeners Forestdale, our clients and other parties present on site. Clients are asked to inform us of any known hazards, restrictions or sensitive areas at their property that may affect the safe delivery of our services.
This policy will be reviewed regularly to ensure it remains relevant and effective. Feedback from workers and clients, along with any changes in legislation, guidance or industry practice, will be taken into account. Gardeners Forestdale is dedicated to continual improvement in health and safety performance as an essential part of providing high quality gardening services.
